Hip, knee and ankle pain covers joint pain
in the lower limb, most commonly
from
osteoarthritis, previous injury or altered
movement patterns. Because
the joints
work as a chain, pain in one often comes
from restriction in
another. Chiropractic
care is one of the treatments used,
aimed at improving
joint movement and
reducing the load going through the painful area.

How common lower limb
joint
pain is in Australia

About 2.1 million Australians, or 8.3 per cent of
the population, were
living with osteoarthritis in
2022 according to the Australian Institute
of
Health and Welfare. It mostly affects the knees,
hands and hips.

It rises sharply with age, from around 10 per cent
of people aged 45
to 54 to 30 per cent of those
aged 75 and over, and affects women
more than
men at 10 per cent against 6.1 per cent.

What it usually feels like

Hip pain is one of the most common forms of
lower
limb pain and is often caused by
osteoarthritis, which
results in inflammation and
pain in the hip joint. Knee
pain often restricts your
ability to move around and get
through simple
tasks, and chronic knee pain from
arthritis or
injury can lead to altered walking patterns.
Ankle
pain is most often caused by a sprain, whether

through sport or a simple misstep.

COMMON SIGNS
Stiffness first thing in the morning that eases
with movement
Pain going up or down stairs
Difficulty getting out of a chair or car
Aching after walking further than usual
A knee or ankle that gives way or feels unstable
Swelling around the joint after activity

The joints work as a chain

Hip

Often the starting point. If the hip is not moving well, the knee below it takes load it was not built for, and the pain shows up there instead.

Knee

Frequently the loudest symptom but not the origin. Worth examining the hip above and the ankle below before assuming the problem is in the knee itself.

Ankle

An old sprain that never fully recovered changes how you walk, which loads the knee and hip over years. This is why we ask about injuries from a long time ago.

When it is worth having
looked at

It is worth having examined if the pain has
lasted more than a
few weeks, if a joint is
giving way, if it is limiting how far you
can walk,
or if an old injury keeps flaring up.

SEE A DOCTOR PROMPTLY, NOT A
CHIROPRACTOR, IF YOU HAVE.

A joint that is hot, red and swollen with
fever, inability to bear
weight after an
injury, an obvious deformity, or calf pain
and
swelling in one leg. These need
medical assessment rather than

chiropractic treatment.

How chiropractic care
is used for it

Restoring the intended function of muscles and
joints is achieved using a combination of
adjustments and therapies, to improve the
affected area by increasing range of motion and
relieving pain.

Our chiropractors aim to reduce the pain and
discomfort in the hip,
knee and ankle. Treatment
will not reverse arthritis where that is the
cause,
and we will say so. What it can do is improve how
the joint and
the muscles around it move, which
reduces the load going through it.

Who treats you

Treatment is provided by Dr George Diab, founder of The Sport and Health Clinic. He holds a Bachelor of Chiropractic Science and a Masters of Chiropractic Science from Macquarie University and has been in practice for over ten years.

What happens when you come in

We talk

You tell us what is going on, how long it has been happening, and what makes it worse. We ask about your work setup and how you sleep. An initial consultation runs 40 minutes.

We examine

A physical examination of the neck and upper back to find where movement is restricted, rather than treating the sore spot on its own.

We explain

We tell you what we think is going on and what we would do about it before we do anything. Standard consultations after that run 20 minutes.

Questions we get asked

Treatment will not reverse arthritis, and we will not tell you otherwise. What it can do is improve how the joint and the muscles around it move, which reduces the load going through the joint. For many people that makes everyday movement easier, even though the arthritis itself remains.

Sooner is generally better. Early assessment tells you whether it is a sprain that will settle on its own or something that needs treatment, which saves weeks of guessing. Ankle sprains that are rushed or ignored are one of the most common reasons the same ankle keeps giving way.

Joints work as a chain. If the hip is not moving properly, the knee below it often takes more load than it was built for, and the pain shows up there instead. This is why we examine the whole limb rather than only the part that hurts.

Usually not to begin with. Imaging often shows joint changes that are not actually causing the pain, particularly as people get older. We examine you first and refer for a scan only where the findings suggest it would genuinely change the treatment.

Yes, and it is more common than people expect. An ankle sprain that never fully recovered changes how you walk, which loads the knee and hip differently over years. This is why we ask about injuries from a long time ago even when they seem unrelated.

No. In Australia you can book directly with a chiropractor without seeing your GP first. A referral is only needed if you are claiming under certain Medicare or insurance arrangements, such as a chronic disease management plan.
