A sports injury is damage to muscle, tendon, ligament or joint caused by training or competition, most often through load applied faster than the tissue can handle. Treatment usually involves settling the injured tissue, restoring normal movement, then rebuilding load tolerance before returning to sport. The last step is the one most often skipped.

How common sports
injuries are in Australia

About 61,000 sports injuries led to a hospital stay in Australia in 2024 to 2025,
according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. Fractures
accounted for more than half of those, most often to the arm or shoulder.

Rugby had the highest hospitalisation rate relative to participation at nearly
1,500 per 100,000 participants, followed by wheeled motor sports at about
1,100 and Australian rules football at just under 750.

Those are only the injuries serious enough to reach hospital. The strains,
sprains and overuse problems that keep people out of training for weeks do
not appear in that figure at all.

The injury heals. The habit that caused it does not.

Most people rest a strain until it stops hurting, then go straight back to training at the same load. A few weeks later it goes again, in the same spot.

The pain is the symptom. What we look for is why that tissue was taking more load than it could handle in the
first place.

COMMON SIGNS
Hamstring and calf strains. Common in running and field sports, and prone to coming back.
Ankle sprains. The most common sports injury, and the one most often rushed.
Shoulder pain. Throwing, swimming and overhead loading.
Tennis and golfer's elbow. Repetitive load through the forearm.
Knee pain. Load related pain in runners and court sports.
Lower back pain. Lifting, rotation and repeated impact.

When it is worth having
looked at

Sooner is generally better. Early assessment tells you whether it is something that will settle on its own or something that needs treatment, and it means you start loading it again at the right time rather than too early or too late.

SEEK URGENT MEDICAL CARE, NOT CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT, IF YOU HAVE

Any suspected concussion or head knock with confusion, memory loss, vomiting or loss of consciousness. Also inability to bear weight after an injury, an obvious deformity, a joint that locks or gives way completely, or severe swelling that comes on within minutes.

ON CONCUSSION SPECIFICALLY

There were just over 2,600 sports related concussion hospitalisations in Australia in 2024 to 2025. Concussion is managed medically, not by a chiropractor. If a head knock is involved, see a doctor first.

What happens when you come in

We talk

You tell us what is going on, how long it has been happening, and what makes it worse. We ask about your work setup and how you sleep. An initial consultation runs 40 minutes.

We examine

A physical examination of the neck and upper back to find where movement is restricted, rather than treating the sore spot on its own.

We explain

We tell you what we think is going on and what we would do about it before we do anything. Standard consultations after that run 20 minutes.

Who treats you

Treatment is provided by Dr George Diab, founder of The Sport and Health Clinic. He holds a Bachelor of Chiropractic Science and a Masters of Chiropractic Science from Macquarie University and has been in practice for over ten years.

Questions we get asked

Sooner is generally better. Early assessment tells you whether it is something that will settle on its own or something that needs treatment, which saves weeks of training around it. It also means you start loading it again at the right time rather than too early or too late.

Usually not. We examine you first and refer for imaging only when the findings suggest it would genuinely change the treatment. Most soft tissue injuries can be assessed properly without a scan, which saves you both the cost and the wait.

Often yes, with the load modified rather than stopped. We would far rather adjust what you are doing than have you sit out completely, because complete rest tends to leave you weaker when you return. If stopping is genuinely necessary we will say so.

Usually because the tissue healed but the load tolerance was never rebuilt. People rest until the pain stops, then return at the same intensity they were at before. Without the build back phase the tissue is being asked to do something it is not ready for.

Yes, we treat WorkCover NSW patients. If the injury happened at work, bring your claim number and your employer or insurer details to your first appointment and we will take it from there.

No. In Australia you can book directly with a chiropractor without seeing your GP first. A referral is only needed if you are claiming under certain Medicare or insurance arrangements, such as a chronic disease management plan.
