Neck pain is pain and stiffness through
the cervical spine and the muscles

around it, most often caused by posture,
muscle imbalance and restricted
joint
movement rather than a single injury. It
commonly comes with
shoulder
tightness and headaches. Chiropractic
care is one of the
treatments used for it,
alongside exercise and changes to
workstation setup.

How common is neck pain?

Neck pain affected an estimated 203 million people worldwide in 2020, according to
the Global Burden of Disease Study. Prevalence peaks between the ages of 45 and
74, and is higher in women than in men.

What it usually feels like

Neck pain is a common complaint in patients who have poor posture. The muscle imbalance and joint dysfunction between the shoulders and back cause increased stress on the neck muscles. It is usually accompanied by stiffness in the neck and shoulders, a dull ache, and a tight band feeling across the head.

COMMON SIGNS
Stiffness turning your head to one side
A dull ache across the top of the shoulders that
builds through the day
A tight band sensation across the head
Headaches starting at the base of the skull
Pain that worsens after long periods at a desk
or on a phone
Pins and needles into the arm or hand
in some cases

Where neck pain usually
comes from

Posture and Desk Work

The most common cause we see. Long periods with the head forward loads the muscles at the base of the skull. It typically builds through the day and eases overnight.

Sleeping Position

Waking with a stiff neck that is difficult to turn usually points to pillow height or sleeping position rather than an injury.

Injury and Whiplash

A sudden strain from a fall, sport or a car accident. This behaves differently to postural neck pain and is examined differently.

When it is worth having
looked at

Most neck stiffness settles within a week or
two. It is
worth having examined if it has lasted
longer, if it keeps
returning, if it is causing
regular headaches, or if it is
affecting your
sleep or your work.

SEE A DOCTOR PROMPTLY, NOT A CHIROPRACTOR, IF YOU HAVE

Neck pain following a significant accident,
weakness or numbness in the
arms or
hands, a severe headache unlike any you
have had before,
dizziness or visual
changes, or neck stiffness with fever.
These need
medical assessment rather
than chiropractic treatment.

How chiropractic care
is used for it

Chiropractors are trained to recognise the joint
restriction and muscle
imbalance that
produces mild to acute neck pain. Treatment
aims to
restore normal movement through the
neck and upper back and reduce
the tension in
the muscles around it.

Our neck pain treatment is tailored to the
individual and aims to correct
the muscle
imbalance and relieve tension in the head and
neck. Where
posture at work is contributing,
we will go through what to change,
because
treatment alone will not hold if you return to
the same setup.

Who treats you

Treatment is provided by Dr George Diab, founder of The Sport and Health Clinic. He holds a Bachelor of Chiropractic Science and a Masters of Chiropractic Science from Macquarie University and has been in practice for over ten years.

What happens when you come in

We talk

You tell us what is going on, how long it has been happening, and what makes it worse. We ask about your work setup and how you sleep. An initial consultation runs 40 minutes.

We examine

A physical examination of the neck and upper back to find where movement is restricted, rather than treating the sore spot on its own.

We explain

We tell you what we think is going on and what we would do about it before we do anything. Standard consultations after that run 20 minutes.

Questions we get asked

That depends on how long the pain has been there and what is causing it. Neck pain that started last week usually responds faster than pain you have carried for years. After examining you we will give you an honest estimate rather than committing you to a long plan up front.

Often it is a large part of it. Sitting with your head forward for hours loads the muscles at the base of the skull, which is a common source of both neck pain and headaches. If your workstation is contributing we will go through what to change, because treatment alone will not hold if you return to the same setup.

It depends on whether the area is inflamed or simply tight. Ice tends to suit a fresh injury in the first day or two, and heat tends to suit ongoing muscle tightness. We will tell you which applies to your situation, because using the wrong one can make it feel worse.

Waking stiff usually points to pillow height or sleeping position rather than an injury. A pillow that is too high or too flat holds the neck at an angle for hours. If it happens most mornings rather than occasionally, it is worth having looked at.

They can. A headache that starts at the base of the skull and spreads forward, often building through the day and worse after long hours at a desk, commonly comes with neck and shoulder stiffness. An examination will tell us whether your neck is involved.

No. In Australia you can book directly with a chiropractor without seeing your GP first. A referral is only needed if you are claiming under certain Medicare or insurance arrangements, such as a chronic disease management plan.
